Certified

To pass the rigorous oral proficiency exam towards Minnesota Court Certification, the following interpreters have demonstrated a mastery of English and the target language at the level of a highly educated native speaker; and have a thorough understanding of legal concepts and forensic terminology in both languages. In addition, certified interpreters have been tested in the specialized cognitive and motor skills required to interpret in the simultaneous, consecutive, and sight interpretation modes; and be able to convey messages accurately, completely and promptly.

Minnesota Court Certified American Sign Language interpreters holding the Legal Specialist Certificate (SC:L) have demonstrated both intellectual and practical knowledge of legal settings by passing rigorous written and performance examinations. Generalist certification and documented training and experience are required prior to sitting for the SC:L exams. Consequently, holders of the SC:L should be considered more qualified to interpret in legal settings than those holding generalist certificates only.

Non-Certified

To be included on the Statewide Roster a Non-Certified interpreter must have completed the following minimum requirements administered by the State Court Administrator's office:

receive a passing score on a written Ethics Test;
complete the two-day interpreter Orientation Program; and
file a written Affidavit agreeing to be bound by the Code of Professional Responsibility for Interpreters in the Minnesota State Court System.

Non-certified interpreters have not had their interpreting proficiency or fluency in English or any other language evaluated.

Sign language interpreters listed on the Statewide Roster must also possess: a Certificate of Transliteration (CT) and a Certificate of Interpretation (CI); a Comprehensive Skills Certificate (CSC); or a Certified Deaf Interpreter [CDI(P)] certificate from the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) or Level V (Master) by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD).
